Community Initiatives in Action

Taking concrete steps to improve food security, mental health, and the wellbeing of our seniors in Waverley West.

Promoting Urban & School Gardening for Food Security

My commitment to contributing to improving urban food security, nutritional needs of seniors, and mental health improvement.

For three years, I have been planting vegetable seeds and handing out seedlings free to community members as part of an initiative I started in 2024, providing free seedlings to over 1,000 people. This year, I have added another dimension: donating my harvest to senior homes.

Practicality – How the Free Seedlings Giveaway Initiative Started

During my first term as Senator of the University of Manitoba Graduate Students Association (UMGSA), I became concerned about the rising cost of food for students. After raising the issue with the Executive, we met with university leadership. The President encouraged us to support our concerns with evidence.

The Executive subsequently commissioned a food insecurity survey in 2023, revealing that many graduate students experienced food insecurity. As a member of the review committee, I believed we needed practical solutions alongside research.

After exploring options with the Degree Restaurant Manager and UMSU regarding green spaces, I met with the Greenhouse Manager in the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences. Following consultation with the Head of Plant Science, approval was granted.

In 2024, I organized over 80 student volunteers to plant seeds in the university greenhouse. The seedlings were distributed free of charge, promoting food security and healthy living. The initiative has since expanded to include a graduate gardening plot established at St. Paul’s College.
